Phaser World Issue 248

Hey, builder! πŸ‘‹

The Reddit hackathon results are in: 700+ games, 3,071 developers, and five Phaser games walked away with prizes. Cattack! took the $5,000 Best Use of Phaser award. Two of the winning teams had never used Phaser before entering. All five shipped something finished in four weeks. That's worth celebrating πŸ†

From the community: a gravity-rotating platformer tutorial, a fact-checking mystery game built for classrooms, and a family-built multiplayer .io game where two kids run the backlog. And on the engine side, Phaser AE v2.6 drops with solid vector graphics, reusable parts, and five classic arcade gameplay packs.

πŸ† The Reddit hackathon results are in. Five Phaser games took a prize

Out of 700+ submissions from 3,071 registered developers β€” a record entry count for a Reddit hackathon β€”, Cattack! took the $5,000 Best Use of Phaser award, judged by our own Phaser panel. A hand-drawn card game about collecting cats in space, built in one month by a solo developer who had never built a tile-based map before 🐱πŸͺ

Four more Phaser games picked up $1,000 honourable mentions: Myndrot (creature-collecting RPG built by two strangers 5,000 miles apart), Hearthvale (one shared village per subreddit), Delta-V Racing (graph paper racing in neon), and Gradient Descent (fly a spaceship by writing an equation). Two teams had never used Phaser before entering. All five shipped something finished in four weeks πŸ†

Β» Tutorial: planet gravity platforming in Phaser 4 and TypeScript

A character walks to the edge of a floating platform and instead of falling, gravity rotates and they carry on walking on the next side. Emanuele Feronato's Phaser 4 and TypeScript tutorial breaks down exactly how to build it: surface-relative movement, edge detection, and jumps that work in any orientation. Full source code and Vite project included πŸͺ

» Le Mystère de la Fleur de Verre: learn fact-checking by playing a mystery [Interview]

Le Mystère de la Fleur de Verre is a free point-and-click investigation game built with Phaser that teaches fact-checking through gameplay. A botanist vanishes, viral posts start spreading, and you solve the mystery using real tools: reverse image search, AI detection, source analysis. No tutorial, no quiz. The tools are the verbs of the game. Built for classrooms, works just as well at home. Free, no ads, runs in any browser 🌸

Β» Whirr .io: a multiplayer vacuum .io game built with Phaser and two kids

Whirr .io is a browser multiplayer .io game built with Phaser where you control a cleanup robot, vacuum up debris, grow bigger, and climb the leaderboard. It looks like the end of the world. It plays like a very relaxing afternoon. Built by a developer alongside his two sons, aged 8 and 10, who are officially in charge of the backlog. Free to play, no install, no account πŸ€–πŸ§Ή

⭐ Phaser AE v2.6: vector arcade games that finally feel complete

Solid vector graphics are here: filled faces with flat colours, gradients, radial fills and rainbow ramps, while keeping the glowing outlines that make vector games feel authentic. Shapes support depth sorting and can be built from reusable parts (a tank with a turret, a car with wheels, a turtle with flippers) each behaving as a single game object.

Beyond that: Tempest-style tube playfields, Battlezone first-person wireframe worlds, Box2D physics integrated directly with vector geometry, and five classic arcade gameplay packs covering Asteroids, Gravitar, Battlezone and more. Plus a UI system that finally stacks dialogs, dropdowns and overlays correctly.
